Interview with Barry Cunningham

I had the great chance to interview Barry Cunningham, the publisher that decided to give Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone a chance.

You were the person that decided to give J.K. Rowling the opportunity to publish her book. What aspect of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone made you take this decision?
I loved both the story and the sense of friendship between the characters. I thought their fierce sense of loyalty would really draw readers in.

How do you feel now about the decision you made?
I’m very proud that the books have made reading ‘cool’ again.

What is the first aspect that you look for in a book to consider it a good one?
Is it true to the age of the characters, do their feelings and emotions feel authentic and do you (the reader) care about them?

What is your favourite character of the Harry Potter series? Why?
Ron, because I feel like hum, always slightly bewildered but determined!

Which Hogwarts house would you be in?
Ravenclaw for its ‘wit and learning’!!!

What do you think about the end of the story of Harry Potter?
It’s impossible to end a series like this. There’s always more to come in your imagination.

What is the best thing that the Harry Potter phenomenon gave you?
The ability to start my own company, the Chicken House, and to continue to publish new authors; also confidence on my own judgement.
